Rutherford High School is proud to announce that former student, Daniel Buell (Class of 2015), recently became a published author. Mr. Buell, along with a small group of other talented writers, worked together to compose eight different stories that make up the book Dead of Winter. I was given the opportunity to interview Mr. Buell about his writing experience and how he hopes to continue this passion in the future.
SK: Did you take any specific classes at RHS that inspired you to become an author?
DB: “No class specifically. I was always inspired by books, movies and games from really early on that it was always something I did outside of class.
SK: How would you describe your recently published book, Dead of Winter, to readers? (Genre, characters, plot, etc.)…No spoilers!
DB: It’s a winter horror series of short stories by the other accomplished authors of Black Spot Books and myself. If you are really into some spooky stories set around the holidays, it’s right up your alley.
SK: Were there any challenges you faced while writing and publishing Dead of Winter? If so, how were you able to overcome them?
DB: The biggest is always “what do I want to write” and that I was asked if I wanted to write for Dead of Winter in the middle of the summer so snow and winter were far out of my mind (laughs).
SK: What are your goals for writing in the future?
DB: *Writing* (laughing). Probably the hardest thing to do for me. I do intend on finishing my own full-length novels and some movie projects I’m in.
SK: Do you have any advice for aspiring authors?
DB: Just write, read, and don’t listen to other people. Three rules to live by, in my opinion. I can assure you that I probably would have been much more accomplished much earlier if I listened to that advice sooner.
