Rutherford Kicks Cancer to the Curb with Relay for Life

On Saturday, May 18, taking place at Tryon Field in Rutherford, NJ locals participated in Relay for Life overnight. During this time, the community raised money for cancer research by taking laps around the field and celebrating survivors, those who passed, and those living with cancer.

Over time, Relay for Life has turned into an event in which the whole town of Rutherford participates and volunteers to help raise awareness for cancer. Senior Caroline McCarthy said participating in Relay for Life really impacts the whole town of Rutherford. Listening to her fellow classmates give speeches was her most memorable part. She states “Relay is one of those events that really changes a community for the better”.

The entire town of Rutherford bonds over fundraising and participating in the relay. Friends and families across the state come to share their stories and make a difference in the fight for cancer. There are tons of games, prizes, and food that commemorate the event. Senior Rutherford High School student Kayla Dray says her favorite part is “coming out and having fun with her friends while fundraising for a cure”.

Participating in the relay will forever hold a special place in the hearts of every Rutherford citizen. It is a memorable night to cherish those affected by cancer and remember the ones taken too soon.
