Teacher Spotlight: Ms. DeLia

By Tierra Sherlock

Even if you have never ventured into Ms. DeLia’s notoriously difficult AP Calculus class, chances are you’ve seen her hunt down NHS members in the hallway or lead the Math Team to victory. Ms. DeLia grew up in Italy, but attended Rutherford High School, undoubtedly as an honors student. If she were not a teacher, Ms. DeLia would be a VP of marketing, as teaching is her second career.

Although she can tackle any equation, Ms. DeLia shies away from passing over bridges and her biggest fear is any type of rodent. In her freetime, she enjoys watching her favorite show “All in the Family,” writing poetry, and reading. Since childhood, Ms. DeLia’s love for books and literature has only grown. Her favorite series is the Harry Potter series and she is a firm believer that anyone  who has not read the books, cannot be trusted. She wrestles with her placement in a Hogwarts house; despite her longtime belief that she is a Gryffindor, Ms. DeLia has had recent revelations that lead her to believe that she may be a Slytherin.

No matter what Hogwarts house she is sorted into, Ms. DeLia possesses the bravery, kindness, intelligence, and resourcefulness that are found in all of the classifications. Her favorite quote is, “Everybody is a genius. But if you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree, it will live its whole life believing that it is stupid.” She embodies this sentiment, being tough on her students, but always offering guidance and encouragement. Ms. DeLia cares immensely for the success of her students and never fails to impart chunks of wisdom. Her advice to the entire student body would be to take education very seriously. As she straightforwardly puts it, “You can lose many things in life, but no one can take your education from you.”
